Today was the first time that I saw hummingbirds feeding on real nectar! All pictures show Anna’s Hummingbirds, which apparently stay around in the Vancouver area all year long. These pictures were taken today in the Rose Garden at Stanley Park.

Part II of the star-gazing this week! In the centre of the concentric star traces, you see Alpha Ursae Minoris, the brightest star in Ursa Minor and the current northern star.
These are two shots of the night sky over Vancouver. The one below was the first attempt: 120 stacked exposures, each 25sec, covering about 1h. The background image was exposed for almost 10min. The main picture of this post was the second attempt: 70 stacked exposures, each 25sec, covering about 30min. Backgound image exposed for 6min. I wish I had more time for the second one, but it was pitch black night and it was getting kind of cold…

Well, honestly it was rather star-gazing than an actual Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, but it totally felt like that because last night there was so much going on in the sky: Tons of meteoroids came down while Julia and I took these images at the far west end of Vancouver.
A note for the photo-enthusiasts among you: This photo is composed of about 70 stacked shots, each exposed for ~30sec, covering a total of about 40min. The base layer that adds some background light was exposed for 5min. Edited in LR3 and PS5. I’ll post a tutorial soon with all the details.
If I am not too tired tonight, I’ll go out and try taking another one, as there are some things to improve in this shot: for example, when you look every carefully you’ll notice that there is a little black spot in each stars’ trace. That’s because it took me a minute to adjust the camera settings after the long exposure (which I took remotely in RAW) to automatic interval shooting (in JPEG). For the first time the intervalometer of the D300 started to really make sense.

This is the incredible landscape of towering cliffs and hoodoos shaped by the Milk River in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in southern Alberta, Canada.
The area was sacred to the Blackfoot people, and one can find a large number of their rock carvings and paintings of the last millennia in the park. Here is one of them.

A female Pronghorn grazing in the plains of southern Alberta near Milk River. Pronghorns are the only still living member of the family Antilocapridae; all others are extinct. Although they are more closely related to giraffes, they occupy a similar ecological niche in North America to antelopes in Africa.
As you can tell from the distances in the pictures below, this female was fairly close, and the atmospheric refractions due to the heat weren’t as bad as.

It was the funniest thing to watch the sandhill crane baby running around. Spreading its wings and tumbling from one leg to the other as if it was practicing to fly. Hope we can make it to Reifel again sometime soon to see the baby grow up and witness its first real attempts to fly.

What does a sandhill crane baby do all day? – Eating, eating, eating! The little crane was constantly fed by his parents, but also managed to find some food itself. The highlight of the endless meal was a fresh berry, and it ran—in a really funny way—as fast as it could to enjoy the juicy fruit. Take a look at the first photo below for the running style!

Last weekend was Reifel time again because the Sandhill Crane babies have hatched! The pair had two eggs, both hatched a few days ago, but only one of the chicks is still around. The other one disappeared within hours for unknown reasons—maybe a predator, maybe the parents killed one. For sandhill cranes it is not uncommon to raise only one young per season.
Anyways, the people from the park fenced off the area where the cranes are, and one can’t get really close to them for now. Fortunately, all three of them walked by where we were sitting and we took some pictures of the little fellow. Take a look and share your comments!

10cm fresh snow in late May

The landscape Julia and I drove through in Waterton Lakes National Park. At night, 10cm of fresh snow had fallen, and all our hiking plans in the mountains were trashed quickly. We ended up driving around looking for wildlife and found, among other animals, the bears I posted previously.

This is the second Grizzly Julia and I encountered during out stay in Waterton Lakes National Park. In the photo above, it looks like the mother is teaching the cub something while it listens carefully, doesn’t it?
The little fellow did all kinds of funny stuff while we were watching them: jumping on his mother’s back, climbing tree stumps, doing somersaults on branches… absolutely funny! Unfortunately, we were about 100m away and the weather was against us. We had snow and rain and everything in between. Focusing through the snowflakes and tree branches was really tough, plus I had to use ISO800+, and crop the images down to almost 1:1 size. Nevertheless, here are some impressions of these fantastic moments between a mother bear and her young.

These are some photographs of the first time in life that Julia and I saw a Grizzly bear! We were totally lucky to spot him (or her) in Waterton National Park several hundert meters away from the street on a snowy day. The good thing was the hills of the landscape guided him directly to the site where we positioned ourselves waiting for him to cross the street. And bam… he suddenly appeared among the bushes, walked towards the street, looked at us for a second, and disappeared on the other side in the forrest within the blink of an eye. I realized only later, but look at his claws in the photo above!

An American white pelican landing just before the dam in Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park south-east of Calgary, AB, Canada.
Julia and I spotted a colony of about 100 of them, but we couldn’t get there because of high water. Luckily, two of them suddenly took off and landed just before us in the water. I guess they where waiting for some easy prey in the trubled water of the dam and got into a little fight for the best spot. With their beaks, they totally reminded me of flying dinosaurs like these ones here.

Spotted by a Sea Hawk

A perfectly symmetrical flying osprey. Photographed by Julia at Beauvais Lake Provincial Park in southern Alberta, Canada. Unfortunately, it was snowing and the sky was extremely bright without any structure.
In the pictures below, one of the adults is bringing nesting material to the nest where the other one is waiting. I couldn’t identify if they had already eggs or even young in there. If so, they must have had a hard night, because it snowed several centimeters and temperatures didn’t climb higher than 3°C that day.

This is one of the three moose Julia and I saw in the Rockies over the past days. This one, however, let us come really, really close.
The situation got a little scary though when this female made some quick steps towards me. Julia escaped in the car, but I was almost lying on the ground and couldn’t run away. The last two pictures below give you an idea what it felt like when the largest deer in the world walked by me with her impressive shoulder height…

At the foot of the Columbia Icefield

Julia and I standing just off the Athabasca Glacier which is one of six glaciers in the Columbia Icefield located half way between Jasper and Banff in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. In the foreground, the receding glacier ice created the typical scars in the bedrock.
Over the past 100 years, the Athabasca Glacier lost more than half of its volume and receded by 1.5km.
In the last picture below, Julia is at the 1908 position of the galcier. It was impressive and worrying to see the impact of global warming this close and dramatic…

Baby Eagles

I still haven’t gotten a good picture of both eagle babies down at Granville Island but I’ll kep trying…
The series below was taken yesterday evening. In the last frame, one of the adult eagles is feeding the young with some sort of prey. Couldn’t really identify what it was, but it looked really bloody.
Unfortunately, I had to use pretty high ISO settings again: 1600 up to 2500, so excuse a little more noise than usual. But I am actually positively surpised, noise and sharpness even with these settings turned out much better than what I expected on site.

This is the pair of sandhill cranes down there that built their nest in the middle of a little lake. Still pretty far away even at 500mm and well camuflaged, but I got some photos of the eggs in the nest! Take a look below:

I wonder what this eagle was yelling just before he landed on this radar plate on one of the boats at Granville Harbour, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Sounded like, “How the hell am I supposed to land on this tiny thing?!!?” Well, he managed to do it and allowed me to take some more pictures.
As it turned out, he and his friend where hanging out up there waiting for a scavenger meal from the seagulls nearby. The two eagles took off every now and then chasing down the seagulls and stealing whatever they had caught. But eventually a crow couldn’t watch it any more and hunted down one of the eagles. Totally caught by surprise, he dropped his prey and barely managed to stay in the air. So, who’s the king of the skys again? Take a look at the drama and tell me:

This is me “talking” to my little squirrel friend. I am not sure if he’s actually a boy (How would you find out?), but I call him Fritz. This little fellow drops by at our window bench every other day or so. In the beginning he was well behaved and stayed outside, but recently he has become really cheeky. As you can see in the video below, he jumps on the kitchen table as soon as you turn around. And you can’t leave the window open when he’s around. A flow of Pāhoehoe lava at the foot of Kīlauea, Big Island, Hawai’i, USA. Below are some more impressions of that amazing day in the Volcanoes National Park Julia and I had during our visit back in 2005.
Unfortunately, back then, all I had was a point’n’shoot camera and took these pictures as JPEGs. And when we went there last year again with a better setup, the volcanic activity was so strong that we couldn’t get anywhere near to the lava flows. Take a look here for example, how far we were away.

Driving up Mauna Kea on Big Island, Hawai’i, USA. From the floor of the Pacific to its summit, this is actually the highest mountain on earth with ~9100m, and the car was almost dying towards the top. Full throttle, it was barely possible to move forward. Don’t want to know how much gas that took.
Make sure to check your rental contract carefully before you attemp to do the same. Some companies exclude that route specifically because of the road and weather conditions up there…

This is the so-called “WestÖstliche Tor” (WestEastern Gate), an art project right at the former inner German border between Ecklingerode and Duderstadt. It symbolizes the massive gates and fences that seperated the two German parts until the reunification in 1989/1990. The project was dedicated in Summer 2002 by the former General Secretary of the Sowiet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev.

Well, this was the closest I have been to one of these beautiful creatures. And as you can tell from the EXIF data, I took this picture with my good old 18-55mm kit lens on the XTi. The beast was literally just 2 meters away from the boat. Seen somewhere around the Southern Gulf Islands between Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

I saw this beauty when I was walking along the sidewalk in Gibsons, BC, Canada, and it was the perfect thing for playing with my new Tokina 116. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time and the background was totally ugly, so I couldn’t align it perfectly and had to crop it down a bit.
I also left the distortions untouched, because I found they make a more dramatic impact here. Here’s another shot.

The torch of the XXI Olympic Winter Games has arrived in Vancouver! Though the weather was typical Vancouver-like, the atmosphere along the route was amazing. Julia took this shot when the flame was passed on from one torchbearer to the next, just a few meters away from our apartment. Pretty amazing moments today. Here are some more shots…

I’ll get up around 4am tomorrow morning and follow the flame over its final stretch to BC Place, where the opening ceremony will take place later in the afternoon. Hope the weather is gonna be a little better. Keep your fingers crossed!

On the last day of the torch relay, Julia and I got up 4am and drove to Stanley Park, where the Olympic flame traveled over the Lions Gate Bridge, around the park, across the better part of downtown, and finally reached BC Place for the opening ceremony. As rumor had it in the recent days, California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the tochbearers for short stretch in Stanley Park. It was crazy when we tried to get closer to him since he was surrounded by tousands of people as soon as he stepped out of his SUV. Nevertheless, in paparazzi style we tried to circumvent the security lines and got a few snaps…

A female Rufous Hummingbird and two young at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, near Ladner, BC, Canada. It was pretty amazing to see their tiny nest, which was merely 4cm in diameter.

The Rufous is observed in almost every state of the USA and southern Canada, except the province of Quebec. This makes it the most widely-distributed hummingbird species in North America. During winter, it migrates south to Mexico and as far as Panama.
